Updated Review: *** $ Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel, California, 2008 - GOOD VALUE

By way of background, opening thoughts: Ravenswood  Winery is known for zinfandel.  I did a video blog post while visitng Ravenswood here.  This tasting is of Ravenswood's most basic, value-priced zinfandel.  I've reviewed the same entry level of Ravenswood's cabernet sauvignon here.

Original tasting and review, September, 2011: This is Ravenswood Vintners Blend Zinfandel, California, 2008, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Ravenswood zin is deep magenta with purple highlights and opaque from a half-inch from the edge of the glass.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright, deep red fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be perky with full tannins.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact red currants, lightly sweet with dollops of acid and tannin.  Blackberries coming through too on the simple palate and bright finish.

In summary: Overall, medium bodied balanced zin experience rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for pleasantness.  Just not quite distinctive enough to reach three stars.  Still touches good value status at its bargain price point.

Following long decant,  full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Deeper, fuller fruit on the nose.  Soft blackberries are riper, too, on the palate.   Reaches three stars with this extra decanting time and becomes a best value.

Updated review, about a year later, September, 2012:  Remains deep magenta in the glass.  Blousy fruit on the nose, with a hint of oxidation. Simple red fruit on the palate.  Pleasant enough, but has given up some of its earlier character.  Drink young.
