By way of background, opening thoughts: Silver Creek Vineyard of California produces a range to classical varietal wines, sourced from multiple California vineyards, all at value prices.  Today we will try three classics from the line, merlot, cabernet sauvignon and chardonnay, with review samples all provided by Silver Creek Vineyard.

Original tasting and review, September, 2011: This is Silver Creek Merlot, California, 2009, finished at 13.% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium deep red with brick edges, not opaque in the glass.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows a surprisingly mature nose, light iron, soft berries.  From the aroma, seems like this will be lighter, but mature in style.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact dry plum and berries that are lifted in the palate with light tannins and acids.  Mature-tasting - as the nose suggested - and ready for drinking soon.  Very clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its distinctive character - somewhat unusual in such a value-priced merlot.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:   Light plums on the nose now, no iron or oxidation elements.  Quite consistent on the palate - perhaps even drier in tone.

Updated review, over a year later, December, 2012:  Still medium burgundy in the glass, with soft, mature berries on the nose.  Consistent in its balanced, but light palate.
