By way of background, opening thoughts: Here we have a North Coast, California, zinfandel, sourced by negociant Cameron Hughes.

Original tasting and review, October, 2011: This is Cameron Hughes Lot 243 Zinfandel, Sonoma County, California, 2009, tipping the charts at 16.5% alcohol.

In the glass: CH Lot 243 is deep burgundy in the glass, with a very slight hint of brick at the edges, not quite opaque in the middle.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows bold, cedar-infused deep fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be potent, bold, rich with black fruit.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact silken soft plums, held taut in their expressiveness, with sleek, bold fruit, solid acids, and a crisp, clean finish.  The alcohol is apparent, but not overwhelming.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for jubilant expressiveness.  Good value.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Consistent aroma.  The palate however has grown silken smooth without losing any of its expressiveness.  Wonderful blend of minerality and aromatic fruit.  Hits four stars and becomes a "best value".

Updated review, over a year later, December, 2012:  Softer black fruit on the nose.  The acids have pulled in their talons, becoming more sleek, adding clean finish to the black aromatic fruit.
