By way of background, opening thoughts: A number of wineries will create wines for different labels that are not directly associated with their brand.  This is one created by the Michael Mondavi Family for Hyatt Hotels Corporation.

Original tasting and review October, 2011: This is Canvas Merlot, Michael Mondavi Family for Hyatt, California, 2009, finished at 13.5% alcohol.  Although vinted and bottled in Napa, the "California" label designation indicates that the grapes were sourced from various vineyards throughout the state.

In the glass: Canvas Merlot shows as deep mahogany.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows soft, rich fruit and deep oak.  From the aroma, seems like this will be full, aromatic and perhaps chewy.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact rich and lush on the mid-palate, with soft, toasty oak surrounding clean, rich blackberry fruit.  The finish comes quickly, with few supporting tannins or acids, but ends wholly clean.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its decidedly pleasant nature.  Best value. Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Completely consistent on nose and palate. Still easy, friendly and tasty.

Updated review, over a year later, March, 2013:  Deep ruddy red.  Chew, rich and still aromatic.  Rich, lush and chewy on the palate still, hints of eucalyptus, chocolate, ripe blueberry.  Peaking, at four stars now, awesome best value.
