Updated Review: *** $ The Spanish Quarter Cabernet Sauvignon - Tempranillo, Spain, 2008 - BEST VALUE

By way of background, opening thoughts: Spain is a region of varied red wines, often from a wide range of native-named grapes from specific local regions.  Today we are trying a value-priced red blend of two common grapes with the appelation of "Spain", meaning the grapes may have been sourced from anywhere in the country.  The website offers the direction that the vineyards hail from northeastern Spain.  The label is a hoot, with a panorama of a plaza in Barcelona and its monument to Columbus. 

Original tasting and review , October, 2011: This is The Spanish Quarter Cabernet Sauvignon - Tempranillo, Spain, 2008, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep magenta, moving to opaque in the center, with both purple and brick glints at the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows deep smoky oak and blackberry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be deep and fruity.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft, rich black fruit, with the light smoky oak overlay that was noticed on the nose. Fruit elements are blackberries and black cherry with low acids.  Finish is fast, but clean.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at its bargain price point.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Brighter and fruitier on the nose.  Consistent, friendly palate.  

Updated review, almost a year and a half later, March, 2013:  Consistent color.  Poured cool, aromas are now a bold, oxidized and almost generic red. Soft plum in the mid-palate, some redder tones around the perimeter.  Light hint of red cherry cough syrup.  Not as tired as the aromas might have suggested.  Upbeat still.
