Review: *** $ Trumpeter Cabernet Sauvignon, Mendoza, Argentina, 2006 - BEST VALUE

Find prices and availability for this wine.

Original Tasting and Review, June, 2010:

By way of background: This is Trumpeter Cabernet Sauvignon from the Mendoza region of Argentina, made by Rutini Wines.  The 2006 vintage is finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Trumpeter is medium deep purple/red.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Mendoza cabernet shows a sweet, lightly musty, red currant nose.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are a rich, perfumed blackberry fruit - think of it as ripe blackberry soaked in very light rosewater.  A balanced mix of fruit and acids crawls along your cheeks and lodges for awhile.

In summary: Overall, rich, red, mid-weight experience at a very modest price.  Rates a full three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a great value.

Following long decant, one day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  the aroma is still perfumed, but spiky and bright now.  Still solid and balanced on the palate.  Not much harmed by the decant, but it hasn't improved things.
---------------------------

Updated review, over a year later, August, 2011:  This has held time in bottle well. Nose and palate are entirely consistent with earlier review.

Following long decant, two days at room temperature in partially filled bottle:  Still very consistent.  Trumpeter takes easily to age and air!

Review: **** $ Patrick Lesec Bouquet Cotes du Rhone, 2005, France - BEST VALUE

Original Review, September, 2009: Patrick Lesec Bouquet Cotes du Rhone, 2005, hails primarily from grenache grapes harvested in Rasteau village in the Cotes du Rhone, France. Patrick Lesec is a "negotiant", meaning that he puts together blends of wines that he finds interesting from grapes that he is able to purchase. Sometimes there is a challenge as to whether these blends will be available in subsequent years. The Bouquet Cotes du Rhone, 2005, comes in at 14% alcohol, fairly typical by today's standards.

Color in the glass is a dark burgundy, opaque in the middle, opening to brick plus purple at the edges.

Aromas make a nice blend of old and new worlds - barnyard from the old, lifted high and strong by the alcohol; sweet. plumy fruit from the new.

On the palate, the older world predominates, at least as the first note. The barnyard moves in along layers of silky, smooth, hefty fruit, reaching up into your cheeks with a lush, toasted leather style. The finish trails on for awhile, bringing perhaps a touch of sweetness and some acids forward. Nice now, I believe this could sit for a time.

Awesome value, given its rating of three stars with a plus for provocativeness on the Spirit of Wine scale, and its modest price. Buy some.

Robert Parker of Wine Advocate was a fan of Lesec Bouquet Cotes du Rhone too, awarding 89 points, and reporting, "A terrific offering is his 2005 Cotes du Rhone Bouquet. ...It shows a nice roasted herb, scorched earth, and chocolatey character, impressive ripeness, medium to full body, and a long finish. It should drink well for 5-6 years."
------------------------

Updated review, almost two years later, August, 2011:  Consistent color.  More old world than new world on the nose now - much barnyard!  On the palate, wonderful balance of old world barnyard and new world fruit.  Finish shows leather and grit.  Solid and bold.  Now four stars and a crazy, awesome value.

And following a long decant, two days at room temperature in a partially filled bottle:  Still solid on the nose and palate, but just tipping towards a bit overplayed - some oxidation.  Recommend the five or six years in the bottle, but not excessive decanting thereafter.

Review: ***+ $$ The Hedonist Rose, McLaren Vale, Australia, 2010 - GOOD VALUE

Find prices and retail availability for The Hedonist Rose.

By way of background, opening thoughts: McLaren Vale of Australia, home of world-renowned shiraz, would seem an unlikely place for rose wines to take root.  But here is one, and one with some good buzz as well.  Let's explore it.

Original tasting and review : This is The Hedonist Rose, McLaren Vale, Australia, 2010, finished at 13.5% alcohol.  This is a blend of 70% cabernet sauvignon and 30% merlot.

In the glass: The Hedonist is a light ruby red with pink highlights, deeper than most roses I've experienced.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows deep fruit aromas of berries and branches.  From the aroma, seems like this will be almost more dry light red than rose in style.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact a balanced mid palate of dry red berries and sleek, mineral mouth feel.  A blend of merlot flavors and chardonnay mouth-feel.  Acids are in check, just sufficient to keep the sip bright.  Finish is modest and clean.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Following long decant, full day at room temperature in partially filled bottle:   Brighter, more aromatic berries on the nose now.  The mouthfeel is sleeker and more mineral now as well.  Enough so to add a plus for this classy balance.  Becomes a good value with this surprisingly-helpful long decant.

Review: ***+ $ Water Wheel Memsie, Bendigo, Australia, 2006 - BEST VALUE

Find prices and retail availability for Water Wheel Memsie.

By way of background, opening thoughts: A much lesser-known area of Australia than, say, Barossa or McLaren Vale is Bendigo, situated in Victoria, in the far southeast section of the country.  Today we will be trying a shiraz-dominated blend from that region.

Original tasting and review : This is Water Wheel Memsie, Bendigo, Australia, 2006, a blend of 87% shiraz, 7% cabernet sauvignon and 6% malbec, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Water Wheel Memsie is black mahogany, opaque from less than a quarter inch in from the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows soft, bold, menthol-laced fruit with sweet helium balloon.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fat, strong and silky.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact just as the aroma suggested, with perhaps just a touch more acid than expected which lifts the brightness.  The fruit is thick rich blackberry plus red currant and a touch of charcoal backbone.  Big opening, full middle, and a finish that trails modestly in length, and ends clean with no cloy.  Not complex, but substantial.

In summary: Overall, a solid, full, somewhat classic southeastern Australia shiraz experience that rates a full three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for keeping such power in balance.  This generates a "best value" nod at its attractive price point.  With confirming enthusiasm, Jay Miller of Wine Advocate awarded 90 points.

Following long decant, full day at room temperature in partially filled bottle:   Consistent aroma, with elements nicely knit together.  Moderately rich but charcoal-laced palate continues.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows crisp and clean.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact crispy with a bit of oak and fun.

Review: ***+ $ Parducci Petite Sirah, #Mendocino County, CA, 2006 - BEST VALUE

Find prices and retail availability for Parducci Petite Sirah.

By way of background, opening thoughts: From Mendocino County in California, we will be sampling a purebred petite sirah.

Original tasting and review : This is Parducci Petite Sirah, Mendocino County, CA, 2006, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Parducci Petite Sirah shows as deep magenta in the glass, opaque from within about a half inch of the edge, showing young purple highlights at the edge, despite being five years from the vintage date.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows funky, deep, helium balloon dark fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be full, rich and perhaps bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact dramatically perfumed of violets and lavender, surrounded by a rich but brightly lifted fruit.  Tannins join the acids to bring the aromatic black currants in to a modestly lengthy, and very clean close.  Big, bold, intriguing and aromatic big red - all of this without even sporting a high alcohol level.  Pretty impressive.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its wide range of attractive attributes. I wouldn't quite call them "layers", but Parducci Petite Sirah does provide such a unique range of aromas and flavors in each sip.  Best value at an attractive price point.  Following long decant, four hours in decanter at room temperature:  Bold, slightly candied red fruit on the nose, all traces of helium balloon are evaporated.  The multifaceted elements are knitting together a little bit better with the decanting time, not giving up any of their attitude.  And even longer decant, three more days at cool room temperature in partially filled bottle:  Even softer, slightly muddy, fruit on the nose.  Still integrated on the palate, but somewhat less interesting.  I would stick with shorter decant and same day consumption.

Besides rating this a strong 90 points, Wine Enthusiast made this a "Top 100 Buy", writing, "This is classic Parducci Petite Sirah, a near-perfect example of the variety. Dry and robust, yet smooth, it has complex flavors of wild blackberries, blueberries, molasses, dark chocolate, bacon and peppery spices. With beautiful balance, it’s a great value."

Review: **+ $$ Chateau Feret-Lambert #Bordeaux Superieur, Libourne, France, 2006

Find prices and retail availability for Feret-Lambert Bordeaux.

Original Tasting and Review, June, 2010:

By way of background: Chateau Feret-Lambert Bordeaux Superieur is a modestly priced red Bordeaux, finished at 13.5% alcohol for the 2006 vintage and made in the Libourne area of France.  It is a blend of 90% merlot and 10% cabernet sauvignon.

In the glass: Chateau Feret-Lambert shows as bold medium red in the glass.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this red Bordeaux shows shy but still somewhat beefy red fruit.

On the palate: The first elements on the palate are an even, almost dusty fruit, hitting smack in the mid-palate.  Purple acids pull into your outer cheeks, raising red fruit aloft, where it hangs for a very long time, lightly accented by furry tannins.

In summary: Overall, a bright, acid-toned experience, designed for food.  Rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for power and persistence.

This wine is featured as part of the Planet Bordeaux campaign, which is seeking to elevate the awareness of the wines of Bordeaux and Bordeaux Superieur in the United States.

Following a full-day decant, in partially opened bottle kept cool:  dusty and beef blood aromas.  The tannins and fruit now blend in the center of your mouth, rich, plumy and bright.
------------------------------------

Updated review, over a year later, August, 2011:  Appears darker in the glass now, deep magenta, opaque from within about an inch from the edge of the glass.  Nose is a touch faded, showing tomato leaves, broccoli and cauliflower.  Solid fruit on the palate, nudged along however with the distinct vegetable overtones.  Seems faded overall, now five years from vintage date.

Review: *** $ Vitiano #Cabernet Sauvignon - #Sangiovese - #Merlot, #Umbria, Italy, 2007 - BEST VALUE

Find prices and retail availability for Vitiano Umbria.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Umbria, just east of Tuscany and a land-locked region of Italy's "boot", generates some intriguing, and often value-priced, red varietals.

Original tasting and review : This is Vitiano Cabernet Sauvignon - Sangiovese - Merlot, Umbria, Italy, 2007, finished at 13.5% alcohol.  It is a highly-rated bargain wine which has been cellared to a point four years from its vintage date.

In the glass: Vitiano is deep velvet burgundy, almost opaque in the middle.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows deep, rich plums with a hint of cocoa.  From the aroma, seems like this will be soft and easy-going.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced, bright red and black fruits in the mid-palate, with an interesting wrapper of gently "popping" acids - almost effervescent - and just enough tannin grit to lend real substance.  Ripe plums with a tiny streak of charcoal run into the sides of your mouth, and settle for the modest finish, which is completely clean.

In summary: Overall, rates a full three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at its very modest price. Following long decant, full day in partially filled bottle at room temperature:  A little grittier now on the nose.  Still very solid and consistent on the palate.

Stephen Tanzer rated this an impressively high 91 points, saying, "Ridiculously dark black-ruby color. Pretty aromas of cassis, black plum and earth, with a pronounced vanilla presence that does not overpower the fruit. Rich and densely packed, with distinctly ripe flavors of black fruits, raisin and chocolate lifted by an intriguing balsamic vinegar note. This finishes lighter than it starts, with welcome acidity nicely delineating the borderline-overripe fruit. Finishes creamy and long. This is a lot of wine for the money."

Spirit of #Wine Review & Rating: ***+ $ Paso Station #Zinfandel, Paso Robles, CA, 2008 - BEST VALUE

Find prices and availability for value-priced Paso Robles zinfandel.

By way of background: This is Paso Station Zinfandel, Paso Robles, CA. The 2008 vintage is finished at 13.5% alcohol.

Original Tasting and Review: July, 2010

In the glass: Paso Station Zinfandel is glistening deep magenta.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Paso Robles zinfandel shows a sweet, eucalyptus-tinged beefy fruit.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are a full and sweet mid-palate black cherry fruit to begin things, followed by acids that move across your tongue.  Tannins are not noticeable, but the sweet/acid combo does lend a nice, luscious balance.

In summary: Overall, a solid, deep, but not over-the-top California zinfandel experience. Rates three full stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a definite best buy at its "practically free" price.

Following long decant, two days kept cool in partially-filled bottle:   Aromatics are more shy and bright now.  The palate has moved to a sweet red fruit, nicely balanced, finishing sweet and rich.   Outstanding with the decant too, gets a plus for having the power to survive that.
-----------------------------------

Updated review, one year later, August, 2011: Consistent color and nose, perhaps just the slightest bit softer on the eucalyptus notes.  Remains a full, rich black cherry experience on the palate.  Little in the way of layers or challenge, but remains thoroughly delicious. Following long decant, full day in partially filled bottle at room temperature:  Sweet and bright red berries on the nose.  Rich on the palate, now smooth red ripe cherries, rather than the black cherries of yesterday.  Outstanding longevity.
