Review: *** $$ Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand, 2008

Find prices and availability for Roaring Meg.

Original Tasting and Review:

By way of background: This is Mt Difficulty Roaring Meg Pinot Noir, Central Otago, New Zealand. The 2008 vintage is finished at 14.% alcohol, and aged for nine months in French oak.  This is part of my long-time quest to find reasonably priced (under $20 US), high-value pinot noirs - a quest that has failed more often than it has succeeded.

Original review, July, 2010:

In the glass: This shows as light red with glinting purple highlights.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Kiwi pinot noir shows a bright, deep nose with tangy currant highs and earthy funk lows.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are well-controlled strawberry with hints of cola.  It comes in a taut package, squeaky clean with acids and just a smidge of sweetness.  The finish curls up into your cheekbones and lodges against your eyeballs.

In summary: Overall, nicely balanced bright red experience. Rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  I am curious to explore decanting and just a bit of age with Roaring Meg.

Following decant:  Two days under vacuum in partially-filled bottle:   Aroma is a more mature stewed blackberry now.  A rounder palate too, with bright fruit - more currants now than strawberry - and still the cola element.  Nicely interwoven with acids.  I slightly prefer the decanted version, which hits a solid three stars.  I'm intrigued to see this with a bit of bottle aging too.
-------------------------

Updated review, over a year later,  November, 2011: No purple in the highlights now, more red and hints of brick.  Aroma is consistent.  The palate has grown more towards mature cola, round, full, ready-to-drink.  Feels like it is at its peak.  More time may turn the corner towards broccoli and vegetables.
Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Mature red berries on the nose, almost over-ripe.  Palate remains round, veering just towards the top - too much longer and I still fear mushiness.

Review: *** $ Esser Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2007- BEST VALUE

Find prices and retail availability for Esser Cabernet Sauvignon.

Original Tasting and Review:

By way of background: This is Esser Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2007, a bargain-priced offering finished at 13.5% alcohol.

Original review, November, 2010:

In the glass: Deep magenta, opaque in the middle.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this value-priced Cali cab offers bold and juicy fruit aromas, little oak or depth.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are rich and sweet blackberry fruit, bright with some acids and lighter cherry overtones.  There is little in the tannic or bold layers.

In summary: Overall, a rich and pleasant sipper, though somewhat lacking in distinction. Rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus because you cannot deny the pleasure it brings in the moment.  Good value at the price.
-------------------------

Updated review, about a year later, November, 2011:  Consistent color and juicy aroma.  Generic yet quite pleasant on the palate.  Fleshy, fruity middle with quick finish.  Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Similar aromas, now more purple.  Soft richness on the palate lifts it to three stars and makes it a best value.

Review: *** $ Ocaso Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina, 2008 - BEST VALUE

Find prices and availability for Ocaso Malbec.

Original Tasting and Review:

By way of background: This is Ocaso Malbec from the Mendoza region of Argentina, a definite value-priced wine from the area, 2008 vintage.

Original review, July, 2010:

In the glass: Ocaso is a deep velvet maroon, almost opaque in the middle.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, this Argentinian malbec shows bright, deep tones suggesting ink and blood.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are a high-pitched blackberry fruit with an element of clean cardboard (not corked).  Quite "purple" in its overall impressions.

In summary: Overall, bright and powerful pizza wine. Definitely wants some rugged food to round its edges.  Rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its potential with a bit more bottle age. Good value.

Following long decant,  two days under vacuum in partially-filled bottle:  The aromas have muted somewhat.  Now the palate is better woven together, pairing rich blackberry with lifting acids.
 ---------------------------

Updated review, over a year later, November, 2011:  Consistent color.  Palate is deeper now, with some chocolate tones along with the inky bloodiness.  Soft, rich blackberry now on the palate.  Rounder than before.  Ready to drink now.  Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Consistent aromas, and some of the milk chocolate comes through on the palate now too.  And even longer decant, another day in partially filled bottle:  Dynamic sleekness on the palate.  Three stars, and a best value now.  This one likes air!

Review: *** $ Hopewell Valley La Valle Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2009 - BEST VALUE

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Hopewell Valley wines.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Pennington, New Jersey - not exactly the first place that would come to mind for cabernet sauvignon.  But this California-derived cabernet is indeed vinted and bottled at Hopewell Valley Vineyards in New Jersey.

Original tasting and review : This is Hopewell Valley La Valle Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2009, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: La Valle shows as deep mahogany, opaque in the center of the glass.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows modest classic, purple fruit with some oak.  From the aroma, seems like this will be balanced and lively.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full bodied, with juicy deep fruit and surrounding tannins and acids sufficient to give it depth and life.  It is a soft wine, fundamentally, but with some layers and distinction.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making it a best value at its attractive price point.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Clean laundry elements coming through on the nose.  Remains soft, not overly so, and friendly.

Review: ***+ $ Eight Legs Semillon / Chardonnay, South Eastern Australia, 2010 - BEST VALUE

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Australian semillon chardonnay..

By way of background, opening thoughts: Semillon is often mixed with chardonnay to provide a deeper mouthfeel and potentially longer-lived wine.  This sample is from South Eastern Australia.

Original tasting and review : This is Eight Legs Semillon / Chardonnay, South Eastern Australia, 2010, finished at 12.9% alcohol.

In the glass: Yellow with gold overtones.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows bright, slate butterscotch.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sleek, sweet and rich.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as anticipated.  A sweet, fresh, mineral fruit is the first element you notice.  It has an almost ground-cherry flavor, which is followed by a bright, clean wrapper which launches into the finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a big plus for its layers and pleasantness.  Best value.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Has held up virtually unchanged on the nose and palate.

Review: **+ $ Woodbridge Mondavi Cabernet Sauvignon, 2005, CA

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Woodbridge Cabernet Sauvignon.

Original review, November, 2007:
This is Mondavi's entry in the "practically-free" category - a
2005 California appelation cabernet sauvignon in the Woodbridge series. I encountered it as "hotel wine" - wine brought out by the dozens for cocktail receptions.

Here's what I found: In the glass, it is a light, mid-red, fairly transparent. The color was more typical of pinot noir than cabernet, frankly. You have to dig deep into the glass with your nose for the aromatics, which come across as profoundly shy, just slightly squeaking of spice and light fruit.

There is just a touch more flavor to the palate than suggested by the aroma. Here it's straight-on cassis and a touch of acid. Fast-finishing too. This is not quite two stars, because I can't really call it an "interesting experience". But better than a star, because I could finish the glass and have another. So I'll give it one plus stars out of five.

Maybe you get slightly more than you pay for with this; but you pay so little that you still don't get all that much.

-------------------------

Updated review, four years later, November, 2011:  Consistent color.  Nose has picked up broccoli vegetative aromatics.  A fuller, more balanced result on the palate than four years ago, showing soft, simple fruit and a clean finish.  Two stars with a plus for pleasant cleanliness.
