By way of background, opening thoughts: How many Kosher South African merlots have you tried lately?  Well, here, we'll give one a try on your behalf!

Original tasting and review : This is Backsberg Merlot, Paarl, South Africa, 2008, finished at a mere 13.% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium deep red with some brick tones at the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows bright and oddly funky deep red fruit.  The funk may blow off with additional air time.  From the aroma, seems like this will be high-toned with brambly fruit.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft raspberry marshmallow, lightly char-broiled.  An easy sip on the palate, bright and fast-finishing.  Certainly unique.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale with a plus for its unique and friendly nature.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Very consistent on the nose and palate. The air does not quite move it to three-star status. Following even longer decant, a total of four days kept cool in partially filled bottle: Soft and easy on the nose.  Smoky, soft and lightly acidic palate, now does touch three stars.
