By way of background, opening thoughts: Wyatt collects grapes for its basic "California" appelation vineyards from unspecified vineyards around the state. Wyatt Cabernet Sauvignon was a "best value" when we reviewed it here awhile ago. Today we'll try the pinot noir - a notoriously difficult wine in which to find a bargain.
Original tasting and review : This is Wyatt Pinot Noir, California, 2009, finished at 13.9% alcohol.
In the glass: Deep red with violet overtones. Beefy looking for pinot noir.
On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows potent blackberry with some raspberry and strawberry overtones. From the aroma, seems like this will be pleasantly fruity, though perhaps simple.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact friendly in the mid-palate, bringing a touch of oak along with the solid fruit. Clean acids bring the fruit to a modest, pleasing finish.
In summary: Overall, friendly and varietally-appropriate experience rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value when acquired at attractive pricing - a real surprise for a pinot noir.
Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Deeper and more interesting layers on the nose. Remains balanced and friendly on the palate.
