By way of background, opening thoughts: Russian River Valley - part of Sonoma County, CA - is a cool climate AVA, known particularly for its chardonnay and pinot noir grapes.  Both of these varietals thrive in slightly cooler regions.  Today we will be sampling both chardonnay and pinot noir from J Vineyards, a 35-year-old operation which owns almost 300 acres across eight separate vineyards in the region.  This allows it to blend from a number of different microclimates for both its varietals as well as its perhaps-better-known sparkling wines.

Original tasting and review : This is J Vineyards Chardonnay, Russian River Valley, Sonoma, CA, 2009, finished at 14.3% alcohol.

In the glass: Light yellow with hints of gold.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows bold melted butter, stainless steel and mixed grasses.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet, full and layered.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact mouth-filling and sleek, bringing soft layers of deep fruit into your cheeks with just a gentle acid sparkle.  You will find creamy yet dry peach and caramel, with a sprinkle of sweet lemonade.  Long, rich finish.

In summary: Overall, strong, balanced, layered experience rates four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Following three hour decant:  Softer nose of silky, buttery fruit.  Very consistent palate with clean, sweet finish.  Following longer decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Gentle, gentle nose; lightly sweet.  Softer caramel on the palate, light and sweet, with a crispy and creamy surround.
