By way of background, opening thoughts: Russian River Valley - part of Sonoma County, CA - is a cool climate AVA, known particularly for its chardonnay and pinot noir grapes.  Both of these varietals thrive in slightly cooler regions.  Today we will be sampling both chardonnay and pinot noir from J Vineyards, a 35-year-old operation which owns almost 300 acres across eight separate vineyards in the region.  This allows it to blend from a number of different microclimates for both its varietals as well as its perhaps-better-known sparkling wines.

Original tasting and review : This is J Vineyards Pinot Noir, Russian River Valley, Sonoma, CA, 2009, finished at 14.4% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium red with light magenta tones.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows clean and brightly fruited with classical pinot noir tones and hints of cinnamon.  Elements of fresh cleaned laundry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be spicy and deep.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact quite balanced and luxurious.  Elements of milk chocolate touch the palate along with the more traditional pinot noir fruit.  The sip glides to a long finish, which - after an extremely long lag time - moves up into the cheeks and closes exceptionally clean.

In summary: Overall, bold and flavorful offering rates a solid stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its deep layers and friendly, clean finish.

Following three hour decant:  Lighter, clean-toned aromas.  Soft and full on the palate, with gentle spices perking up the edges.   Following longer decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Spicy and clean on the nose.  Remains fully-featured on the palate, with depth, spices and a clean finish.
