By way of background, opening thoughts: Sister-wine to a pinot grigio, we are sampling a value-priced merlot from the Dolomiti region of northeastern Italy.

Original tasting and review : This is Mezzacorona Merlot, Vigneti delle Dolomiti, Italy, 2009, finished at 13% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep burgundy, moving to opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows smoky fruit with distinct ripe plum elements.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bright and easy-going.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact slightly sweet and bright on the mid-palate, with bright percolating acids at the edges.  Shows cherries and ripe plums.  Modestly lingering finish.

In summary: Overall, tasty experience rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Great value at its price point.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Softer deep plums on the nose.  Bright yet fuller on the palate, with a richness that wasn't apparent on the initial opening.  Gains a plus for friendliness.  Best  value.
