By way of background, opening thoughts:  We are sampling a red wine today from the Alentejano region of Portugal.  The blend consists of syrah, trincadeira and aragonaz - the last two being grapes more familiar to the region than to international palates.  This blend from Montaria was available at "practically free" pricing.

Original tasting and review, February, 2012: This is Montaria Vinho Tinto Red Wine, Alentejano, Portugal, 2008, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep black magenta, opaque from about a half inch from the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows perfumed red berries with some dark wood, hints of very lightly oxidized motor oil.  From the aroma, seems like this will be layered and funky in an interesting way.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact brightly perfumed, almost oddly funky with motor oil red fruit stew.  Sleek on the palate, however, with a clean finish.  The funk subsides, by the way, with a fairly short time in the glass, bringing layered fruit to the fore.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Great value for price.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Consistent, just slightly vegetable, aromas.  Layered red fruit stew on the palate.

Updated review, almost three years later, now six years from vintage date, December, 2014:  Consistent color and aroma.  Bold on the palate still, with a fresh but deep motor oil essence.  Gets a plus on the three stars for its distinctive, aromatic palate, bold, deep, fresh and full.  Awesome value.
