By way of background, opening thoughts:  Essentially, "primitivo" is Italian for "zinfandel".  Today we are sampling a purebred primitivo, available at a value price, that scored a solid 90 points with the Wine Advocate.  The twist is that we are not trying this when first bottled, but now seven years from vintage date.

Original tasting and review : This is Botromagno Primitivo, Puglia, Italy, 2005, finished at 13.% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep burgundy, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows funky deep black fruits, with touches of hay, manure and old world wood.  From the aroma, seems like this will be both round and old world.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact big round fruit and big hay/manure.  Interesting combo.  The sweet round fruits are first apparent, simple but fun.  The hay and manure bring along a definite layering and attitude.  The finish moves to being just a tad too thin.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  That makes this unique offering a best value at its price.  No need to hold this long, however, even though this seven year old bottle has not turned the corner.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Fruit aromas show an iron ore element.  The dark fruit and old world elements remain nicely knit together on the palate.  Quick finish.
