By way of background, opening thoughts: As regular readers of these reviews will already know, I am in general a fan of McLaren Vale, Australia, shiraz.  Today we are trying one from a relatively lesser-known vineyard in the area, Angel Gully, with almost a decade of age since vintage date.

Original tasting and review : This is Joseph Angel Gully Shiraz, Clarendon, McLaren Vale, Australia, 2003 , finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep magenta raisin, opaque from within a half inch of the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows classic bold black cherry and eucalyptus, on the darker side of the norm from this area.  From the aroma, seems like this will be rich and bold, perhaps even with hints of some old world elements.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact fresh, big, bold and balanced, showing a brighter red currant tone than expected.  Full of stuffing and depth, too, as expected.  Big, dry black cherries in every sip, with just the slightest hint of sweetness as the glass settles.

In summary: Overall, touches four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Following long decant, two days kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Consistent nose.  Still deep, sweet berries in the sip, now a mixture of black raspberry and cherry, with nice, sweet furry tannins surrounding.

Updated review, almost two years later, now 10 years from vintage date, December, 2013:  Consistent color and aromas, though both are showing maturity - not old age, mind you - just maturity.  Red fruits on the palate are sleek and rich, with ripe black cherry backbone.  Fully drinkable now, but no hint that it is about to curl over the top, so fine to hold for another year or two as well.
