Review: ***+ $ Martin & Weyrich Moscato Allegro, California, 2010 - BEST VALUE

By way of background, opening thoughts: Italian moscato is typically a light, sweet, perhaps slightly effervescent white wine with light alcohol content and a refreshing bright, grassy, summer attitude, made from the muscat grape.  We're sampling one today that actually hails from California, not Italy, and takes advantage of the muscat canelli grape.  Fermentation is halted before completion, yielding the low-alcohol and high residual-sugar content.

Original tasting and review : This is Martin & Weyrich Moscato Allegro, California, 2010 , finished at 7.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Clear- to very-light yellow.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows sweet and brilliant light green grass.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet, bright and mouth-filling.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact even sweeter and rounder than expected, with first flavor notes more coming in as citrus peel and light motor oil (pleasantly tasting motor oil!) with brighter grassy notes at the edges.  The finish lingers, staying sweet, and lifting with a little acid spritz at the end.

In summary: Overall, friendly enjoyable experience rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Best value given its bargain price.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Consistent nose, perhaps even sweeter.  Palate now balances the nose, matching weight and bright grassiness, gains a plus for walking the tightrope between these extremes.
