By way of background, opening thoughts: We've reviewed quite a range of Montes wines from Chile in these pages, and a number have been good values.  Here is a new one for us, a 70% cabernet sauvignon, 30% carmenere blend.  We've sampled both varietal components before, giving the cabernet sauvignon four stars and the carmenere three stars with a plus.

Original tasting and review : This is Montes Limited Selection Cabernet Sauvignon 70% Carmenere 30%, Apalta Vineyard, Colchagua Valley, Chile, 2009, finished at 14.5.% alcohol.

In the glass: Mahogany red with glints of ruby.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows inky, purple elements, yet still soft and inviting.  A touch of wintergreen.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bold, flavorful with deep fruits and bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact bold and sweet with tannins in the mid-palate, bringing ripe blackberry and a coating of sweet, but just lightly bitter tannin.  It is a refreshing combination, embedding its sweet darkness into your cheeks, where it slowly oozes more black purple fruit.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a big plus for its dark and luscious soul.  Good value, with promise for improved score with a bit more air or aging.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Consistent aromas, cool and minty.  Even bigger on the palate now, with the bitterness beginning to withdraw from the tannins.
