By way of background, opening thoughts: Of all the many Italian wine varieties, it is Amarone della Valpolicella that alone causes my toes to curl.  Usually my lips too, into a wide smile.  Today, we'll try a fairly widely available version, attractively priced, from Riondo.

Original tasting and review : This is Riondo Amarone della Valpolicella, Italy, 2006.

In the glass: Medium deep red, glints of violet.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows shaved cinnamon and ripe plums. Something about a clean, well-kept barbershop.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact soft, rich, sturdy perfumed and alcoholic. Drips sweet violets on the finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for richness and attitude.
