By way of background, opening thoughts: Grenache grapes on the Italian island of Sardinia are called "cannonau".  And a Sardinian cannonau is precisely what we will be sampling now.  Anti-oxidants in this cannonau grape are part of what Dan Buettner attributes the long-lived Sardinian life-span to in his Blue Zones book.

Original tasting and review : This is Sella & Mosca Cannonau di Sardegna Riserva, Sardinia, Italy, 2007, finished at 14% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium red with brick overtones, now at five years of age since vintage date.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows deep old-world wood and funk.  From the aroma, seems like this will be tangy, peppery and full of old-world character.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact precisely as expected with the big, brash, old world character, but with a surprising dollop of big, sweet and friendly new world fruit too.  It is the wine equivalent of "Doublemint" gum - two, two, two worlds in one!!  Bits of orange, spice and leather flow along with the ripe fruit.  No hint of this being tired at five years of age.  But also no need to wait.

In summary: Overall, unique experience just touches four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value.   An interesting note concerning the combination of old world and new world in this wine:  note that the alcohol percentage is 14%.  That sits comfortably between the typical old world red wine alcohol percentage of 13 or 13.5% and the more typical new world percentages over 14%.

Following long decant, two days kept cool in partially filled bottle:  Old world nose adds dry leaves and orange peels, yet some sweet black berry there now as well.  The palate still shows the new and old worlds in combination, perhaps a little more knitted together, a little more harmonious, even if a little more muted.
