By way of background, opening thoughts: More and more offering, we are finding the grenache grape becoming available in US wines as a stand-alone varietal.  We are trying such an offering today from Stolpman Vineyards.

Original tasting and review : This is Stolpman Grenache, Estate Grown, Santa Ynez Valley, California, 2007, finished at 15% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep ruby red and magenta.

On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows bold, sweet, light red berries.  Think red Delicious apple peels.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet, bright and perhaps rich.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact tart and furry in the mid-palate, with the tone of red raspberries, but more the flavor of a red peach, if there was such a thing as a red peach.  Finish is lengthy with a combination of sturdy, furry tannins, mixed with solid acid undertones and red fruit.  Gently creeps into your cheeks to settle.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its distinctive and bold identity.

Following two hour decant:    Same bright, light red berry aroma.  Bright, red, flavorful and full on the palate.  Sweet red currants for miles.  Holds up great to air.  Will accept even longer decanting time. Following longer decant, two days kept cool in partially filled bottle: Same nose.  Just a little sturdier, and more purple, on the palate.  Finish is clean, bright and balanced.
