By way of background, opening thoughts: Spring in the northeast United States is a wonderful time to begin considering the lightly chilled, generally lightly sweet wines from the muscat grape, often called moscato.  Widely available in Italy (as moscato), the grape is finding a friendly home in California as well.  Today we are sampling an offering from Salt of the Earth in Madera, California, a sweet muscat wine.  Review sample was provided by the winery.

Original tasting and review : This is Flore de Moscato Sweet Muscat Wine, California, 2010, finished at 7.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep vanilla with yellow overtones, reminiscent of a very light motor oil.  Some effervescence showing.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows a bright mineral oil and ripe pineapple-infused nose, with a pleasant tangy funkiness.   From the aroma, seems like this will be slick and sweet with aromatic flavors.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as suggested by the nose, with an even sweeter, more glycerin-packed mouthfeel.  Light, sweet lemon comes along with the pineapple as a follow-up note on the palate.  Plenty of sugar, but finishes clean without cloying.  Perky acids offset the sweetness into the close.

In summary: Overall, rates a three stars with a big plus for pleasantness on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, coming precariously close to four star status.  This is a hands-down best value.
