By way of background, opening thoughts: Malbecs and Mendoza, Argentina, are one of the most classic pairings in the wine world.  We are trying a purebred 100% Mendoza malbec here today.  Don't let the words on the back label throw you, though.  They strongly suggest a deep tie between between the winemaker, his grandfather and the ground on which the grapes are grown.  "He told me the soil in which the vines lived were a layer cake."  In fact, five of Layer Cake's varietal wines come from five entirely different places in the world.  I won't hold that against the review, but I don't like being misled by clever copywriting.

Original tasting and review : This is Layer Cake Malbec, Mendoza, Argentina, 2010, finished at 14.6% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep magenta, not quite opaque anywhere.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows sweet and deep oaky fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be solid, sweet and perhaps taut.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced, rich, fruity, lush and structured.  Flavor notes include lightly sweet ripe blackberry, cocoa and mixed spices.  The round palate has a nice layering of tannins which give lift and depth.  Finish is steady and lengthy.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for depth and balance.  I'd award a minus for misleading copy, but that's a separate issue from the wine.   Good value for price.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: Somewhat sweeter and fruitier on the nose.  Round, full, flush palate with sweet notes of pepper, dark chocolate and espresso.  Lengthy finish.  Four stars now with the long decanting.  Best value.
