Review: *** $$ Anticato Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2009

By way of background, opening thoughts: Cabernet sauvignon from California - probably as straightforward a wine description as you could find anywhere.  It is a quintessential pairing of place and wine grape.  Thanks to importer Barclay's Wine , we are sampling a California-based cabernet sauvignon from Anticato Wines.

Original tasting and review : This is Anticato Cabernet Sauvignon, California, 2009, finished at 13.8% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium deep ruby red.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows a touch of oak with its classic fruity plum aromas.  From the aroma, seems like this will be easy going, generous and full of plums.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing a deeper style than anticipated, with a touch of pleasant funk building a base for the ripe black plum fruit.  The finish holds, but turns inward rather than up and out as it continues.  So the wine has an attractive, gently contemplative style.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  I'd return for another bottle.

Following long decant, two days kept cool in partially-filled bottle:   Solid in the nose, with less hint of oak.  The palate is soft and still generous.
