Review: **** $$$ Numanthia Termes, Toro, Spain, 2008

By way of background, opening thoughts: Tinta de Toro grapes make up this fabled bottling from Numanthia, called Termes.

Original tasting and review : This is Numanthia Termes, Toro, Spain, 2008, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Jet black with burgundy highlights only at the edge.  Else opaque.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft, layered swells of red and black fruit with some menthol and sweet oak.  From the aroma, seems like this will be luscious and deep, perhaps brooding.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full, soft, sensuous and still powerful, bringing black currant, deep blackberry fruit, noticeable tannins and acids that bring a portion of the sip up into your cheeks.  Bright fruit, deep layers, sandy base and a finish that heads into your cheeks with acid and across your palate with deep fruit.  Substantial and, yet, sublime.

In summary: Overall, rates four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale. Definitely makes me more interested in other offerings of Tinta de Toro grapes from this region!

Following long decant, two full days kept cool in partially filled bottle:   Deep full blackberry and creamy coconut on the nose.  Full, layered sip digs even deeper and creamier with the long decant.  Yes, some of the newly-arrived coconut remains apparent too.
