By way of background, opening thoughts: Pepperwood Grove, part of the Don Sebastiani and Sons portfolio, and makers of the intriguing Green Box series, provided a tasting sample of their recently-released pinot noir in what they call "The Groovy Green Bottle".   The bottle is fairly traditional, but I would acknowledge that the cap, called a "Zork Closure" is unique indeed.  Unopened, it looks somewhat like a sealing wax cap, but its plastic rim peels off in a spiral, revealing a reuseable stopper inside.  Enough about the package, let's check out the pinot noir!

Original tasting and review : This is Pepperwood Grove Pinot Noir, Valle Central, Chile, non-vintage, finished at 13% alcohol.  It is one of the least expensive Chilean pinot noirs you will find in the States.

In the glass: Medium magenta with violet tones.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows sweet but shy fruit with distinct dark oak.  From the aroma, seems like this will be generous and easy-going.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full of friendly oaked fruit on the mid-palate, meeting expectations from the aromatics.  The texture is full and the finish is brief but clean, revealing some strawberry notes at the finish.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars with a plus for friendliness on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  At one and a half stars above its bargain price level, it shows a nice ratio of value to price.  That is especially true given that it is a pinot noir, a varietal notorious across Spirit of Wine for price ratings that exceed star ratings.
