Review: ***+ $$ QV Quinta de Viluco Syrah, Valle del Maipo, Chile, 2005 = GOOD VALUE

QV Syrah.

By way of background, opening thoughts: Today we have a Chilean syrah.  On paper, holds great potential - low yields, high concentration, 12 months in French oak, excellent price point.  Let's see what it delivers.

Original tasting and review , July, 2012: This is QV Quinta de Viluco Syrah, Valle del Maipo, Chile, 2005, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Magenta-black, opaque from about an eighth of an inch from the edge of the glass.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows deep, inky black and purple fruit, with plenty of structure.  From the aroma, seems like this will be flavorful, black and full.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact consistent with expectations.  Full mouth feel, excellent yet soft structure.  For the seven years of age, still shows backbone.  Fruits are red and black, flavorful and bright.  Some cocoa showing with the blackberry. Mouth-filling as the finish builds, ends fruity and remarkably clean.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a big plus for layers and concentration.  Good value.

Updated review, two and a half years later, now nine years from vintage date, December, 2014:  Black mahogany in the glass, opaque from a quarter inch in.  Aromatic prunes and plums on the nose.  Full bodied, thick, lightly sweet feeling full plum fruit.  "Put in his thumb and pulled out a plum!"  And yum.  Plenty of tannic body supporting the luscious fruit.  Very concentrated still... and not showing its age.
