Review: ***+ $$ Tulip Hill Winery Cabepulciano Montepulciano / Cabernet Sauvignon, Tracy Hills, California, 2009 = GOOD VALUE
By way of background, opening thoughts: Here's a second offering from theTulip Hill Winery in the little-known Tracy Hills region of California; this time a combination of both montepulciano and cabernet sauvignon grapes.
Original tasting and review , July, 2012: This is Tulip Hill Winery Cabepulciano Montepulciano / Cabernet Sauvignon, Tracy Hills, California, 2009, finished at 13.9% alcohol.
In the glass: Deep mahogany with glints of purple.
On the nose: Poured cool with a brief decant and swirled vigorously, shows spicy plum fruit with hints of oak. From the aroma, seems like this will be bright and tight with some fruit coming through.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much softer and rounder than suggested by the nose, bringing soft bathroom robes to coat the plum fruit. Vanilla and ripe black cherry enter the mix. The finish is fairly brief, perky and fruit-toned, but ultimately clean.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
Updated review, now six years from vintage date, January, 2015: Color now deep brick. Still clean, fresh plums on the nose. Sweet, fresh plum and blackberry, with a light tannin dusting. Gains a plus on the three stars, making this a good value with age.
