By way of background, opening thoughts: Napa Valley is the cradle of civilization when it comes to American cabernet sauvignon.  Today we are sampling a Napa cabernet sauvignon that is actually available at a value price point, under $20 U.S.

Original tasting and review , August, 2012: This is Annabella Special Selection Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa Valley, CA , 2009, from the Michael Pozzan Winery in Oakville, CA, and  finished at a modest 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep magenta, opaque from about a half inch in from the edge.

On the nose: Poured cool and swirled vigorously, shows soft, very shy plum fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be full-bodied but simple in a classic style.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full-bodied as anticipated, but with a bit more layering on the palate.  Velvet blackberry shows a soft tannin cloak and a clean, lingering finish.  It has seen oak, but the oak does not make a starring appearance.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Following long decant, full day kept cool in partially filled bottle: The nose is opening a little more more now, showing blackberry flowers.  Flowery purple brightness mixes nicely with the layered blackberry, generating an additional plus for depth on top of the three stars... and making this a good value.

Updated review, almost two years later, now five years from vintage date, May, 2014:  Still deep magenta in color with clean plum fruit on the nose.  Very consistent and clean on the palate.  Unfortunately, does not move beyond fairly generic fruit, so it has not been able to extend beyond its three-star status.  Following long decant, full day under decant:  Layers out nicely - gains a plus on its three stars, becomes a good value.
