Review: *** $ Departure Wines Syrah, Terra Alta Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley, California, 2006, = BEST VALUE

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Departure wines.

By way of background, opening thoughts: I have certainly enjoyed some Santa Ynez syrah's in the past.  I don't believe I've ever had the opportunity to enjoy one that retailed at less than $10 a bottle.  But now I will!

Original tasting and review : This is Departure Wines Syrah, Terra Alta Vineyard, Santa Ynez Valley, California, 2006, finished at 15.1% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep dark brick, opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, bold, oaky and black fruited character.   From the aroma, seems like this will be savory, big, deep, with tobacco and black cherry tones.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact deep and fully balanced fruit.  Sweet, dark and peppery, with a jammy and long finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
