By way of background, opening thoughts: I liked the 2002 version of this wine a great deal.  Let's see how it is working in the 2009 vintage.

Original tasting and review : This is J. Lohr Los Osos Merlot, Paso Robles, California, 2009, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep burgundy, brick at the edge and opaque in the center.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, soft, bold black cherry.  From the aroma, seems like this will be fruity and deep with a sense of soft sweetness.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as expected, with a resonant freshness and underlying light tannin structure.  Fresh plums and prunes in the clean but fruity nose.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for pleasant depth.  Best value.
