Review: ***+ $$ North Ranch Vineyards Red Wine, Thousand Oaks, Ventura County, California, 2009 = GOOD VALUE

Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Ventura County wines.

By way of background, opening thoughts:  North Ranch Vineyard is not a household name as a winemaking site.  Nor is the village it is in, Westlake Village, nor its city of Thousand Oaks, nor its county, Ventura County.  But the vineyards are, indeed, in California, and only a 10 minute walk from my home.  So let's give this Syrah-based blend a try.

Original tasting and review : This is North Ranch Vineyards Red Wine, Thousand Oaks, Ventura County, California, 2009, finished at 14.6% alcohol, and produced by Tensley Wine.

In the glass: Deep burgundy, opaque from within a half inch from the edge.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and  swirled vigorously, shows bright poignant red berries mashed in among deep blackberries and plums.   From the aroma, seems like this will be unique, bold and tangy.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact an aromatic and deeply fruited initial sip, followed by a balanced mix of soft deep fruit and light tannins. The finish moves to perfumed aromatics.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for potency and balance. Good value too!
