By way of background, opening thoughts: Five years ago, I reviewed a three-year-old merlot from south Australia called Marquis Philips Merlot, vintage 2004,, and gave it a strong four stars. By chance, I was able to recently obtain a 2003 vintage of the same wine. So, I am reviewing this merlot at a full decade from its vintage date!
Original tasting and review : This is Marquis Philips Merlot, South Australia, 2003, finished at 14% alcohol.
In the glass: Medium deep red, opaque in the middle.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft, sweet, clean red fruit, no hint of age. From the aroma, seems like this will be balanced, fun and slightly tart.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced for sure, with rich red fruit and underlying layers of solid oak. As the nose revealed, no real hint of age, except for the well-knit nature of the flavors. Finish moves with acidity into the cheeks, is long and exceptionally clean.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its solid balance. Good value at its price point if you can still find it.
