Check out today's pricing and retail availability for Moscato Allegro.

By way of background, opening thoughts: For Valentine's Day, O'Neill Vintners offers a pair of bargain priced, lightly sweet moscato wines that may help set just the right mood.  Both hail from California, are made from muscat canelli grapes and are fermented cold in stainless steel.  The pink version is blended with a touch of red wine. Review samples were provided by the winery's representative.

Original tasting and review : This is Martin & Weyrich Moscato Allegro, California, 2011, finished at 8.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Clear with just a hint of honey.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright grapefruit peach and stainless steel with a little hint of motor oil.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bold, sweet and energizing.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact very much as the nose suggests: a sweet, clean oil wash across your tongue bringing lightly sweetened grapefruit peach gliding to your cheeks.  The finish moves to a sandy sugar and finishes remarkably clean, given the sweet entrance.

In summary: Overall, rates an impressive four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale. Original, fragrant and pleasurable.  Easy best value.

Original tasting and review : This is Martin & Weyrich Pink Moscato Allegro, California, 2011, finished at 8.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Light strawberry hay.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows a tangy, lightly funky sweetness, with some of the motor oil elements reminiscent of the straight moscato.  From the aroma, seems like this will be interesting, but not as layered as the Moscato Allegro.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweet, fresh, lightly fruity and quite creamy. Soft, easy and clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for extreme likability.  Best value too.
