By way of background, opening thoughts: McLaren Vale - along with Barossa Valley - is one of the classic regions of Australia for shiraz.  Today we are sampling an eight-year old from the region.

Original tasting and review : This is Sylvan Springs Hard Yards Shiraz, McLaren Vale, Australia, 2005, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep brick and muddy magenta red.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft and bold chocolaty cedar, quite classic aromas from the region.  Soft, but not over-aged.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet, rich and bold.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact a bit brighter and lighter than expected.  Still, shows deep red fruit and a surround sound of furry ripe red berries.  Clean, fresh, red finish, not extremely long, but clean.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars with a plus for pleasantness on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Good value.
