By way of background, opening thoughts: Let's try a nicely-aged Chilean cabernet sauvignon - it's been awhile!

Original tasting and review : This is Cousino-Macul Antiguas Reservas Cabernet Sauvignon, Valle del Maipo, Chile, 2006, finished at 14% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep ruddy red, not quite opaque in the middle.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows a soft, fat red nose - almost obese.  From the aroma, seems like this may be tired and almost over the hill - but this could be masquerading as a result of the missing decant.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact fat, more smoky and slightly more structured than anticipated.  Full, rich fruits with some dark smoke and hints of oak at the back end.  Finish is moderately long and clean; but I am disappointed as I believe I allowed the bottle to outlive its useful age, which is clearly less than seven years from vintage date.

In summary: Overall, three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, due to the power which I am convinced I miss in its youth. Still a best value at its remarkable price.

Following long decant, full day in partially-filled, vacuumed bottle at room temperature:  Remarkably, the wine pulled back together, grew more structure, reversed its senility and, importantly, garnered an additional plus on the Spirit of Wine scale.
