By way of background, opening thoughts: Folie a Deux is perhaps best known for its wine blends. Today we will try a stand-alone Alexander Valley merlot from the maker.

Original tasting and review : This is Folie a Deux Merlot, Alexander Valley, Sonoma, California, 2011, finished at 13.7% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep burgundy red.

On the nose: poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, fresh, sweet and bold grapes elements.   From the aroma, seems like this will be both friendly and solid.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact even thicker and richer than anticipated, with a nice core of deeply rooted tannins supporting the easy going, lush fruit.  Think a rich blackberry compote.  Finish is moderate, but holds long enou to tell you this wants to be serious.

In summary: Overall, rates three plus stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  It is a friendly but intentional merlot.  Good value at its price.
