By way of background, opening thoughts: Chariot Gypsy is a value-priced red blend of multiple grapes from throughout California.  It is being promoted strongly these days at Trader Joe's.

Original tasting and review : This is Chariot Gypsy Red Wine, California, 2011, finished at 13.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium red, slightly deep.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows purple soft fruits.  From the aroma, seems like this will be light, sweet and perhaps soft on the palate but bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact showing more aromatic depth in a melange of sweet black and red fruit.  Classic California meritage, it shows some syrah/zinfandel pepper along with the sweet fruits.  Light tannins, clean finish.  Not for aging.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale - almost garners a plus but lacks just a bit of "oomph".  Still a best value at the "practically free" price.
