By way of background, opening thoughts: It's kind of crazy to have much hope for a Napa Valley cabernet sauvignon selling in the single digits, but one of those is offered by Trader Joe, so we'll give it a try.
Original tasting and review : This is Vintage Press Cabernet Sauvignon, Napa, California, 2010, finished at 13.9% alcohol.
In the glass: Deep magenta, not quite opaque anywhere in the glass.
On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft, sweet fruit - a bit generic on the nose. From the aroma, seems like this will be simple, friendly but perhaps forgettable.
On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact quite a bit better balanced than anticipated, showing a combination of fresh fruit and just enough tannins to lift them from pure fruit status, bringing them into your cheeks for a solid, clean and robust finish to the sip. Few acids and no real "grit" to the tannins, but a friendly balance of plush mint and deep red and black fruit.
In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, making this a best value at its attractive price point.
