By way of background, opening thoughts: Despite Sideways, let's try a Santa Ynez merlot today

Original tasting and review : This is Firestone Vineyard Merlot, Santa Ynez Valley, California, 2009, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep magenta.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright fresh plums.  From the aroma, seems like this will be brighter than expected.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact rich, layered, silky red fruit, practically dripping on the palate. Rich red cherries for miles. Smooth, lush, lingering.  Not your grandfather's merlot.  Tannins on the finish show that this bottle has real grit along with its feminine elements.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy four stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, and is a definite best value.
