By way of background, opening thoughts: Santa Barbara County, California, is creating some outstanding pinot noirs and merlots of late.  Today we are sampling a pinot that weighs in at a value price, given the stature of the area.

Original tasting and review : This is Santa Barbara Collection Pinot Noir, Santa Barbara County, California, 2009, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium red, some brick tone to the color, more than I might have expected at four years in the bottle.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright, light red spicy sweetness, less of the classic California pinot noir depth.  From the aroma, seems like this will be gentle, fragrant, sweet and lithe.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact light red cherries touched with cinnamon.  The  length is modest, and the finish moves upstream to brightness, with a clean bright sparkle at the end.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
