By way of background, opening thoughts:  Cupcake had a best value red wine blend that I reviewed recently; today we will sample the pinot noir.

Original tasting and review : This is

Cupcake Vineyards Pinot Noir, Central Coast, California, 2011, finished at 13% alcohol.

In the glass: Light to medium red with faint orange highlights.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bright, simple, classic pinot noir aromatics.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet, bright and easy.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact much as anticipated, perhaps with a bigger blast of dark streaks and charred oak on top of the red cherry.  Pleasant, sweet, clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, yielding a best value, unusual for a pinot noir.
