By way of background, opening thoughts: Plungerhead Old Vine Zinfandel certainly gets an award for weird label!  Let's see what's inside.

Original tasting and review : This is Plungerhead Old Vine Zinfandel, Lodi, California, 2011, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Medium dusty red.

On the nose: Poured at very cool cellar temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, oaky spice.  From the aroma, seems like this will be deep and sweet with red fruit.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact a bit darker with oak than anticipated, but supported with bright deep fruit. A bit of creaminess supports the red fruit and dark edges.   Clean finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Becomes a best value when acquired at the right price.
