By way of background, opening thoughts: Twisted is a line of bargain-priced California varietals.  Today we will sample the merlot.

Original tasting and review : This is Twisted Merlot, California, 2011, finished at 13% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep red with magenta highlights.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows simple varietal merlot fruit, quite plum, with some intriguing elements of freshly washed linen.  From the aroma, seems like this will be simple but with a minor twist.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact deeper, lusher and with a noticeable oak tone.  A bit charcoal and taut with acids on the finish.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, and is a best value.
