By way of background, opening thoughts: Not Chateau Lafite Rothschild, but a closely-named bargain-priced Bordeaux relative.

Original tasting and review : This is Lafite Barons de Rothschild  Collection Bordeaux Réserve Spéciale, Bordeaux, France, 2009, finished at 13% alcohol.  This is 70% merlot and 30% cabernet sauvignon.

In the glass: Medium deep magenta.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows shy, generic merlot fruit with a light lacing of old world oak.  From the aroma, seems like this will be light, accessible, but not distinctive.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact a bit richer with violet tones and layers than anticipated.  Solid, bright toned with acids, yet some underlying dry but deep black fruit.  Clean, brightly layered finish.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars with a plus for accessibility and layering on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
