By way of background, opening thoughts: Paso Robles is the heartland for California reds - today we will sample a reasonably-well aged zinfandel from the region.

Original tasting and review : This is Varner Wine Foxglove Zinfandel, Paso Robles, California, 2007, finished at 14.6% alcohol, first sampled at six years from vintage date.

In the glass: Deep dusty dark red.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bold, fragrant plum-laced fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be sweet, thick and bold.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact sweet, red strawberry fruit, quite luscious and round.  Light tannins and acids lift the entire experience.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for its long-lived bright nature.  Good value.
