By way of background, opening thoughts: I've enjoyed shiraz from a number of regions of Australia, but not yet Coonawarra.  We'll remedy this today, with a well-aged version.

Original tasting and review : This is Penley Estate Hyland Shiraz, Coonawarra, Australia, 2007, finished at 15.% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep magenta, opaque from a quarter inch in.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep black fruit with aromatic red berries.  From the aroma, seems like this will be deep, juicy and bright.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact full of fresh, ripe raspberries, with blackberry juice backing.  Plenty of brightness and still some grit, despite six years of age.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale, with a plus for long-lived liveliness.  Reached 90 points with Wine Spectator.  Good value by Spirit of Wine reckoning.
