Original tasting and review : This is Bonterra Zinfandel, Mendocino County, California, 2010, finished at 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep purple and magenta, opaque in the very center of the glass.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows soft very shy fruit. From the aroma, seems like this will be simpler than anticipated from the varietal and the sturdy alcohol level.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact round, and slightly generic, merlot-style fruit, much as anticipated.  Finish is clean, but brisk and slightly heated with the alcohol.

In summary: Overall, rates two stars with a plus for pleasant-enough sipping on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.

Following long decant, full day under vacuum in partially-filled bottle:  Consistent shy nose and mostly-generic flavors.  But the overall mouthfeel and balance improves the bright wine.  Has gained enough substance and polish to just touch three stars.  Based on this, I would recommend either a little bit of age, or some decanting before pouring.
