By way of background, opening thoughts: Rioja red wines from Spain evoke images of traditional, ages-old winemaking and traditions.   The Rioja wine we are sampling today, from the look of its label, is evoking a much more 21st Century tradition.

Original tasting and review:  This is Palacios Remondo La Vendimia, Rioja, Spain, 2012, finished at a distinctly new-world 14.5% alcohol.

In the glass: Deep magenta.

On the nose: Poured at room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows bold, almost tarry purple plum fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be soft and dramatically fruity.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact aggressively poised between deep fruits and bright acids.  The plum flavors are displayed in strawberry-bright style.  As the sip develops, alcohol and acids crawl up and lodge into your cheeks.  A big, bright and yes, definitively new-world experience!

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.
