By way of background, opening thoughts: Douro, Portugal, is known for its port wines, but in recent years some of the dry red varietals from the region have been making more inroads globally.  Today we'll try a red blend.

Original tasting and review : This is Quinta do Portal Mural Reserva Red Wine Blend, Douro, Porto, Portugal, 2010, finished at 14% alcohol, first sampled four years from vintage date.  It is a blend of 40% tinta roriz, 40% touriga franca and 20% touriga nacional, with one-quarter of the wine aged in French oak.

In the glass: Deep mahogany, opaque from a half-inch in from the edge.

On the nose: Poured at cool room temperature and swirled vigorously, shows shy stewed red and black fruit muddle.  From the aroma, the flavors are tough to guess.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact inky, dry, quite raspy black raspberry (ok, now I now where raspberries get their name from!).  After the sip, slightly sweeter hints of fruit spit into your cheeks, settle in for a full minute with hints of cocoa and earth.  Very contemplative.

In summary: Overall, rates three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Easy nomination as a best value according to our criteria.
