By way of background, opening thoughts: Today we are sampling a vintage Napa merlot from our cellars.

Original tasting and review : This is Artesa Merlot, Napa Valleym,  California, 2002, finished at 14.3% alcohol, aged for two years in French oak barrels, and first sampled at a whopping 12 years from vintage date.

In the glass: Deep brick red.

On the nose: Poured at cellar temperature and swirled vigorously, shows deep, mature and muddled dark red fruit.  From the aroma, seems like this will be bold but potentially showing its age.

On the palate: The primary elements on the palate are in fact balanced and soft deep red fruit.  Yes, it shows its 12 years of age, but hasn't fallen into senility.  Think of it as deep blackberry fruit that enjoys a morning hike, but likes to spend the afternoon in the rocking chair.  The finish is fruity with some supporting acids.  Not heavy at all.

In summary: Overall, rates an easy three stars on the five-star Spirit of Wine scale.  Although perfectly pleasant at 12 years of age, I am sorry that I did not have experience Artesa merlot six to ten years earlier.
